Artists, Antiquaries and Collectors: illustrations of Surrey Buildings collected by Robert Barclay of Bury Hill, Dorking, 1800-1832
In the early nineteenth century, John Hassell and his son Edward produced thousands of exquisitely-detailed watercolours of Surrey houses, churches, schools, workhouses and other buildings. Gentlemen, like Robert Barclay, collected them to extra-illustrate their copies of the three-volume 'History and Antiquities of Surrey' published by Owen Manning and William Bray between 1804 and 1814. This illustrated talk celebrates the achievement of the Hassells and places it in context within the wider history of collecting and the tensions that existed between the scholarly demands of antiquarian draughtsmen and popular artists in search of the picturesque.
