Open Day at the University Centre
The building will be open from 10 am until 4 pm. University staff and the architects will be available to answer questions. The design of the new £6.5million University Centre was won by Design Engine Architects through invited competition in 2004. It is the practice's third project for the University of Winchester. The 3000sqm building sits on a steeply-sloping site, where the natural topography of the campus is both a virtue in terms of character, and a hindrance to access. The design involves two main entrance courts, with secondary access at mid-level to accommodation over four floors. The cross section links an 11-metre height difference across the site and is conceived as two halves. The lower two levels are buried into the hillside, while the upper floors shelter beneath a delicate roof canopy that floats out over the incline.
