Talk at the Lightbox
Thursday 5 June 5.30-7.30pm
The Lightbox: exceptional addition to Woking
Julia Barfield, of
Marks Barfield Architects, best known for The London Eye,
but also the designers of
The Lightbox a new gallery building in Woking, will
talk about it, and other recent work and their collaborations with artists. There will also be the opportunity to look
around the Lightbox, which was recently shortlisted for an
RIBA Award, and its exhibitions, and join
us for a glass of wine or juice.
The Lightbox
Opened to the public on September 15, 2007, the Lightbox has two of the most exciting gallery spaces in the South East.
It is also home to Woking's Story, an interactive
museum of the town's history, where you can listen to people's memories of life in Woking and watch historic films.
Inside the Lightbox
Gold, silver and green
Julia Barfield will talk about the process of developing their designs for the Lightbox, including listening to the concerns
and ideas of local people, to make sure that the new gallery was an exceptional addition to the Woking landscape. The gold
and silver façade which illuminates the building reflects the importance of what it contains for people
across the South East.
You will hear about how the Lightbox is a very 'green' building - generating some of its own electricity from photovoltaic
cells on the roof, the rest coming from the town centre's combined heat and power.
Colours of precious metals reflect the value of the Lightbox
Find out more about the materials used - the gold- and silver-coloured aluminium tiles on the façade
facing the town centre; the timber cladding to the canalside elevation that will weather to a silver colour; and the full-height
glazing of the main entrance, creating a light and airy space to welcome people into the building.
Hear too about the collaborations with artists through the design of this cultural and community facility.
